Infiniband

InfiniBand addresses the challenges IT infrastructures face as more demands are placed on the interconnect with ever-increasing demands for computing and storage resources. Specifically, InfiniBand has the following advantages:

 

 

Superior performance.

InfiniBand provides superior latency performance and products supporting 20Gb/s node-to-node and 60Gb/s switch-to-switch connections. In addition, InfiniBand has a defined roadmap to 120Gb/s – the fastest support specification of any industry-standard interconnect.

Reduced complexity.

InfiniBand allows for the consolidation of multiple I/Os on a single cable or backplane interconnect, which is critical for blade servers, data center compute and storage clusters and embedded systems. InfiniBand also consolidates the transmission of clustering, communications, storage and management data types over a single connection. The consolidation of I/O onto a unified InfiniBand fabric significantly lowers the overall power and real estate required for server and storage clusters. Other interconnect technologies are not well suited to be unified fabrics because their fundamental architectures are not designed to support multiple traffic types.

Highest interconnect efficiency.

InfiniBand was developed to provide efficient scalability of multiple systems. InfiniBand provides communication processing functions in hardware – relieving the CPU of this task – and enables the full resource utilization of each node added to the cluster. In addition, InfiniBand incorporates Remote Direct Memory Access which is an optimized data transfer protocol that further enables the server processor to focus on application processing. This contributes to optimal application processing performance in server and storage clustered environments.

Single data rate (SDR) InfiniHost III Ex cards support dual 10Gb/s InfiniBand connections based on PCI-e x8. InfiniHost III Ex HCA cards deliver the most cost effective 10 Gb/s solution available and feature remote direct memory access (RDMA), hardware transport, and advanced per queue pair (QP) QoS services.

Mellanox HCA DDR

InfiniHost III  4X InfiniBand Host Channel Adapter (HCA) cards connect to the host system through a PCI Express interface. Double data rate (DDR) version supports 20Gb/s InfiniBand connections. InfiniHost III Lx and Ex HCA cards deliver the most cost effective 10 or 20Gb/s solution available and feature remote direct memory access (RDMA), hardware transport, and advanced per queue pair (QP) QoS services.

ConnectX adapter cards provide the highest performing and most flexible interconnect solution for Enterprise Data Centers, High-Performance Computing, and Embedded environments. Clustered data bases, parallelized applications, transactional services and high-performance embedded I/O applications will achieve significant performance improvements resulting in reduced completion time and lower cost per operation.

Servers supporting PCI Express 2.0 with 5GT/s will be able to take advantage of 40Gb/s InfiniBand, balancing the I/O requirement of these high-end servers.
